Brown spots in your lawn? Time to check for grubs!

I get a lot of questions from clients as to why their yards look like the picture above. There are many reasons an area of turf might start to look like this including improper mowing, pet damage, thatch or improper soil conditions. One cause, often overlooked by homeowners is the pesky White Grub. These critters are hard to detect because they live down in the soil, feeding on the roots of the lawn you've worked so hard to produce! They only become visible to us once they've morphed into beetles in the middle of the summer. The best way to check for grubs if you think they may be present is to grab a piece of the brown lawn and pull it back. If it peels back like carpet you should be able to see White Grubs living in the soil below.

As you can see, the most effective way to make sure grubs don't become a problem is to do two applications during the year, one for both major life-cycle phases. This practice, along with the application of fertilizer and new grass seed in the fall will have your lawn lush and green in just a season or two.
